the bishkek adventure

although "our story" as a couple originated in 2006... the bishkek adventure officially began in july of 2008 when jennifer and i accepted teaching positions at an international school in bishkek, kyrygzstan. we started this blog with the hope that it would be an entertaining and accurate catalog of our years living abroad. although we are back in the states now after two years in central asia and our life is not nearly as exotic or exciting... we are keeping the blog going writing for our friends, families and for our first born child, olivia (olive) annmarie conover, who blessed us with her arrival on monday, august 24 at 2:15pm.

spring break

it is hard to get too riled up about internet censorship (and blogger constantly being blocked) when it is spring break and we get a whole week together as a family without pesky things like work, life and responsibilities getting in the way.

we started the week of with a trip to lake issy-kul with nelson, lauren and sebastian (olive's future husband). we stayed on the north shore about a four hour drive from bishkek at a resort called karven four seasons. i am not sure that it is fair to call the resort "four seasons" as blizzard blew through the first night and we lost power for most of it... but otherwise the place was super nice. i would go so far as to say "american nice". we shared a cottage with nelson and lauren and each family had their own side of the house with private bathrooms. huge living room area and a nice big kitchen (without a stove... which we were prepared for as we brought a portable stove... but still weird). the resort is right on the lake and features a pier built right over the water. indoor and outdoor tennis courts. indoor and outdoor pools. water slides. playgrounds for kids. bowling alley. disco. hot tubs and sauna. and the best 1000som (about $18 usd) hour and a half hot stone massages.

nelson and lauren have moved into the upper echelon of friends who we can say that we actually like traveling with (april, holly and randy/bridget would be the others). they were very laid back and easy going. quick to laugh and they place just as much emphasis on cooking and eating good food and taking naps as we did.

great trip and we are already planning another trip with a larger group in may and in august when mom and aunt ann come to visit.

the rest of spring break was pretty mellow and quite. loads of olive and boone time... so in other words... perfect.

  1. Looks very cold...brrr..but looks like a good time was had by all. No heat...blizzard...no stove...sound like my kind of trip! Is it typical to not have a stove? Sebastian enjoyed the bubbles. Glad you all had a good time!

  3. hey, this loooks great!!! I love the north coast! Did you travel with one car? How did the kids manage the ride? Just wondering... ;))) Now Olive is about the same age, as Lenara was, when you were here - and you were so excited about Olive being this age. Time passes so quickly! And hey, here is sweatpants-Dave again (when I was talking about those two images of you in a comment earlier...).
