the bishkek adventure

although "our story" as a couple originated in 2006... the bishkek adventure officially began in july of 2008 when jennifer and i accepted teaching positions at an international school in bishkek, kyrygzstan. we started this blog with the hope that it would be an entertaining and accurate catalog of our years living abroad. although we are back in the states now after two years in central asia and our life is not nearly as exotic or exciting... we are keeping the blog going writing for our friends, families and for our first born child, olivia (olive) annmarie conover, who blessed us with her arrival on monday, august 24 at 2:15pm.

two reason saturday

two reasons why we love bishkek (especially apropo since our painful decision yesterday to stay here for another year plus instead of moving):

osh bazaar.  never, never gets old.  osh is big, crazy, and an assault on the senses. the weather on saturday was warm and glorious so we visited it for the first time since early fall just after jennifer arrived and when april was here visiting.  anything and everything you need you can get at osh it seems like.  had an extra set of house keys made.  bought some light bulbs and an extension cord.  and did a big food shop (so many good fruits and veggies).  olive was wide eyed and attentive as usual - seemingly amazed by everything around her.  a funny moment (although we worried about cooties!) was when a random kyrgyz woman (with gold teeth and everything) stopped jennifer and swooped in and gave olive a big fat kiss on the face while all the way saying in kyrgyz how cute she was (or at least that is what we think she was saying.  either that or she placed a curse on our daughter).  olive looked shocked but amused.  jen and i laughed before breaking out baby wipes and cleaning off her face!  an overall great time and of course i had to buy some mutton and chicken shashlik to munch on while we were walking.  with the fruit that we bought - jen made some baby food for olive to eat.  she has turned into a full fledged eater - chowing down everything from rice cereal, sweat potatoes, pears, bananas, to peas.  she is such a good eater... or at least good at getting it on her face.

nina came over around 800pm to watch olive while jen and i went out on date night to a party at some friends house.  nothing says central asia (reason number two while we loved bishkek today) like a party with belly dancers!  you can see me in the background of a couple of the belly dancing pictures trying to act cool and not dance along.  we left early as olive woke up and went into full fledged breakdown mode.  nina called us and by the time we arrive home nina was literally sweating from rocking and walking around with our daughter while trying to console her.  poor nina.  poor olive.  jen decided to stay home and i went back to the party (i sound like such a bad husband and father... but jen made me go) for a while.

all in all a good saturday.
