the bishkek adventure

although "our story" as a couple originated in 2006... the bishkek adventure officially began in july of 2008 when jennifer and i accepted teaching positions at an international school in bishkek, kyrygzstan. we started this blog with the hope that it would be an entertaining and accurate catalog of our years living abroad. although we are back in the states now after two years in central asia and our life is not nearly as exotic or exciting... we are keeping the blog going writing for our friends, families and for our first born child, olivia (olive) annmarie conover, who blessed us with her arrival on monday, august 24 at 2:15pm.

dinner with the missionaries

for months now we have been hitting and missing on plans to have dinner with the missionaries jonathan, david, paul and their wives.  i know them from my basketball team and they are really great guys.  they are here in bishkek leading a russian language christian church - different than the english language international church that some expats go to.  i say "hit and miss" in regards to the plans but really we have been avoiding them a bit afraid that it would turn into a recruiting session.  i know that sounds horrible to say... but it is how we feel (me more so than jen).

we finally made plans to go out tonight to our favorite turkish restaurant.  paul and his family are out of town (back in the states due to a medical emergency with one of their new born twins).  david and his wife couldn't make it.  so it was just jonathan, katie, their son and us.

my fears of being recruited were off base.  we had a good time with lots of unintentionally funny conversation.  jen told them she thought i was gay when we first me in yoga class.  at which point they responded with a "is it true that there are gays just walking the streets everywhere in california".  did i mention that they were both home schooled and went to christian bible colleges?  when we were asking them about their story of meeting and getting married - they shared they didn't really have much in common at first - at which point jen broke out with "at least you had god to talk about".  she said it in such a way that was sweet and nice but i couldn't help laughing at the same time.  yep... we are pretty much going to hell.
