the bishkek adventure

although "our story" as a couple originated in 2006... the bishkek adventure officially began in july of 2008 when jennifer and i accepted teaching positions at an international school in bishkek, kyrygzstan. we started this blog with the hope that it would be an entertaining and accurate catalog of our years living abroad. although we are back in the states now after two years in central asia and our life is not nearly as exotic or exciting... we are keeping the blog going writing for our friends, families and for our first born child, olivia (olive) annmarie conover, who blessed us with her arrival on monday, august 24 at 2:15pm.

sunday trip to osh bazaar and ala-archa

sunday turned out to be a nice, sunny day (although it ended up being pretty cold up in the mountains) and we decided to take april to see bishkek's two big tourist destinations - osh bazaar and ala-archa national park.

osh was an adventure. olive was fussy the entire time. locals already tend to stare at us as we are americans. but they even stare more when you are carrying a crying baby. at first the staring felt very uncomfortable... especially for jenny who is in full fledged new mom mode. then it got pretty comical as ladies working the bazaar starting gesturing to jennifer to put olive on her boob. i lost count of how many woman would say something in russian and then follow it up by pointing to olive and then point to jen's boob. jen of course had already tried this and olive was inconsolable. we stopped on a ledge to change her diaper where we were ushered back into a flour warehouse by a really nice woman. she cleared off a table for us to change the diaper. gave a chair to jen to sit in. and after a little while took it upon herself to hold olive and try to calm her down.

how many people does it take to calm down my pterodactyl daughter? apparently her mom, her dad, our friend from america, and a kyrgyz woman!

jen, the wonder mom that she is, finally got olive soothed and asleep. i bought her a pink hat (which jennifer wore for a while herself) and we continued to explore the bazaar.

after osh, we drove up to ala-archa. the weather on saturday was pretty overcast so it was pretty exciting for april to actually get to see the mountains outside of bishkek. our plan was to lay out on some blankets, picnic, and enjoy the views. we drove up... found a great little spot... got out of the car... immediately froze our asses off... got back into the car... drove back down the mountain... and came home and took a nap.

although we were only in the mountains for a short time. boone LOVED it and ran like crazy. it was so fun to see him gallop around and it was exactly what we dreamed of when we decided to bring him here with us this year.

the girls ended up sleeping from 300pm until almost 800pm when i finally bribed them awake with two pizzas from doka.
