i have been fortunate enough to direct and start two university outdoor recreation programs in the past four years. first at california state university, san bernardino (csusb outdoors) and most recently at the university of houston (uh outdoor adventure).
big difference between the two, right? csusb outdoors was all about surfing on socal's amazing beaches, snowboarding 30 minutes from campus, some of the best rock climbing in the southwest, backpacking to 12,000', and frolicking naked in hot springs. while we don't have the same scale of wilderness in texas, it has still been an amazing place to run programs... farmer market bike tours, climbing in the hill country, canoeing through downtown houston, and surfing in galveston.
the similarity between the two and the thing that makes outdoor recreation/education so powerful is the community that is created. an adventure is an adventure... be it exploring the canyon lands of utah or exploring the streets of houston on a bicycle. and anyway, the adventure is just an excuse to build friendships and let people laugh and have fun.
while jen and i view teaching abroad as a possible lifestyle... i am sure that where ever we land (the alpine fund in bishkek!) i will maintain that connection with outdoor recreation programing. i am definitely excited about the opportunities to take kids from bishkek international school up into the mountains and for jen and i to have our own wilderness adventures.
