the bishkek adventure

although "our story" as a couple originated in 2006... the bishkek adventure officially began in july of 2008 when jennifer and i accepted teaching positions at an international school in bishkek, kyrygzstan. we started this blog with the hope that it would be an entertaining and accurate catalog of our years living abroad. although we are back in the states now after two years in central asia and our life is not nearly as exotic or exciting... we are keeping the blog going writing for our friends, families and for our first born child, olivia (olive) annmarie conover, who blessed us with her arrival on monday, august 24 at 2:15pm.

melancholy thursday

it is a melancholy thursday. the sky is overcast and a steady petter patter of rain is falling outside. the sun light that normally brightens our living room has been replaced with a soft, dark, gray glow. although it is almost 1000am, jen is still bundled up in bed like a mummy, sleeping peacefully. the morning frenzy that is normally the dogs has succumbed to the weather and the mood as they both are laying down facing the bedroom waiting to hear sounds of jen stirring.

the house is in disarray. boxes sit half unpacked... there are no empty spaces on shelves or tables as they are covered with an a sundry of objects which haven't decided if they should accompany us half way around the world.

for the first time i am sad about leaving. not hesitant... not unsure... i am just feeling a little melancholy about moving on and away from my family... from our friends... from our life here in houston which really has been a blessing to us as a couple. i am so excited for the adventure of living abroad... the joy of being married to my best friend... starting a family (don't worry grant - you will be here soon enough!)... the fulfillment of teaching... i look forward to the struggles of learning a new language and a new culture... of being able to drink mare's milk on a daily basis (!)...

but this morning i am wishing that we could do those things without having to leave behind our family, friends, and dogs.

  1. If I didn't love you already, reading this makes me want to marry the man who talks about his fiance in this sweet way that you do. The weather is parallel to the feeling of today, definitely.
    Everything will be okay, Sweetheart.
