the bishkek adventure

although "our story" as a couple originated in 2006... the bishkek adventure officially began in july of 2008 when jennifer and i accepted teaching positions at an international school in bishkek, kyrygzstan. we started this blog with the hope that it would be an entertaining and accurate catalog of our years living abroad. although we are back in the states now after two years in central asia and our life is not nearly as exotic or exciting... we are keeping the blog going writing for our friends, families and for our first born child, olivia (olive) annmarie conover, who blessed us with her arrival on monday, august 24 at 2:15pm.

on being back in bishkek

living houston was a mixed bag. hard to leave our apartment in montrose which we just love, love, love. hard to leave the lifestyle we have in houston. the bike rides. the park time. the university. the food! hard to leave our amazing community of friends. harder still to leave family behind that we cherish so much. but it wasn't hard to leave the consumerism and commercialism. seems like everything revolves around shopping and buying. shopping and buying. after in central asia since august... american life seems so fast paced, hectic and stressful. by the end of my six weeks in houston... i was ready to come back.

of course the other side of the coin is life in bishkek which is also a mixed bag.

kyrgyzstan is a third world country. not having access to everything we have in the states. the pollution. the terrible roads. crazy suicidal drivers (actually... driving is kind of an adventure... i like it!). being so, so far away from our family and friends.

that said... life is simpler here. slower. we love going to the bazaars and buying our food from the local farmers. we like how close we are to such dramatic nature. we like learning the language and the culture. we love that we don't take things for granted when we are here and that we are thankful for everything.

despite the cost of living overseas... and by cost i mean "being away from family and friends"... we love it over here.

it is good to be back in bishkek.
