the bishkek adventure

although "our story" as a couple originated in 2006... the bishkek adventure officially began in july of 2008 when jennifer and i accepted teaching positions at an international school in bishkek, kyrygzstan. we started this blog with the hope that it would be an entertaining and accurate catalog of our years living abroad. although we are back in the states now after two years in central asia and our life is not nearly as exotic or exciting... we are keeping the blog going writing for our friends, families and for our first born child, olivia (olive) annmarie conover, who blessed us with her arrival on monday, august 24 at 2:15pm.

joy in the journey... dad's church pants & black eyed peas

My husband and I look like showgirls!

These shoes were made for dancing!

Houston's Hyatt Regency Hotel is about a mile a half mile from our apartment. We brought in the new year there with 50,000 balloons falling on us there!
Leave it to David if you want to do have a good time! He always is so creative.
David is our activities coordinator and when our friends Mark & Em said that is what they were doing for New Years, David quickly called to make reservations. It's a good thing he did because it was so crowded. The festivities had a good spread of people which varied in ages and that made it really fun. I mean, how often do you get to see a ninety year old woman get face painting done, huh?
Thinking that everyone else was on the same page as us, we checked in at 3 (We love having some time off!) and went to our room and put out our fancy clothes we were going to wear that evening. Like the dorky 80's couple at the gym who wears matching florescent warm-up combos, we planned to wear matching colors (dark crimson red and black). That's still cute, right? : ) Hey, we're newlyweds and I'm going to milk that as long as David is willing. When we were at Dave's dad's house for Christmas, he inherited a few snazzy pairs of polyester church pants and the black pair was perfect for the occasion. The whole night Dave kept telling people he was wearing his dad's church pants...it made me think of prom.
Anyway, we brought games with us and were planning some fun competition but then everyone left the hotel (in total there were 4 other couples) who went to go get more prepared for the evening and pick up their spouses. Alone in the room, with plenty of time to spare, we did just what you are thinking...slept. With a late night ahead of us (we have been known to crash at around 9 or 10), we napped and David tried mercilessly to connect to the promised free internet as posted in the advert for the hotel, all with no avail. Well rested, we hit the town around 7pm, which was good timing since that is when madness in the lobby began with mass check-ins. Cold and a little windy, we walked down Louisiana Street and up to Cabo's Tacos who redecorated since we last ate there. Cheese & Queso, tortilla soup, shrimp, and strawberry lemonades were what spoke to us as Dave watched the Rockets game and I about fell asleep, again. (Making a baby all day is tiring stuff...but the best feeling ever!)
On the walk back, every time the countdown to cross the street began we would countdown also and kiss. Every time! It never got old. I kept thinking it would and that David would stop initiating it, but loved that every single time we said things like "it's our own little new year's" or "we're practicing for the countdown"...as if we had to explain to each other why we were running across every street and then kissing. We tell ourselves that we are the funniest people we know.
When we headed up to the room we did some showering, some ironing, some primping, etc and went down for all the hoo-rah at around 9:30 after meeting the other couples who were playing a card game when we showed up at nine. Bananagram (the game we brought) is so much more fun. Thanks Nick & April for that Christmas Present...we have got so much use out of it already.
The party at the Hyatt was pretty fun. There were bands, face-painting (as I mentioned before), photo booths, and lots of people who apparently were really "thirsty". I think someone spiked the punch with Mountain Dew. (That's only funny if you know what FHE or EFY stands for). Being sober, it was entertaining to say the least. David and I danced with a whole lot of people that thought they were fabulous sexy dancers. Key word: thought.
We walked around a lot, danced, and people-watched.
When the countdown began, we found our place on a little alcove overlooking the lobby where the other 1900 people congregated. When the balloons were released from the ceiling, I thought they would cover us from head to toe. Can you imagine, 50,000 balloons?
We were so amazed at all of them that I think we forgot to kiss for a few seconds. It was kind of like when I went to Cirque de Soleil and forgot to clap because I was so amazed.
Promptly after the balloons fell, people began stomping and popping the balloons (since they went up to our knees) and with all the commotion, we got hungry again. Using our unused 'drink coupons' that were issued as part of the package, we bought a large pizza and 2 sodas and headed up to our room. Carrying over-sized balloons and gathering the ones that fell on our floor, we covered the floor of our room with the balloons too so it was like the party kept going on!
Thanks, David, for planning such a thoughtful New Years Celebration. It was fun to go out on the town with you! I love you.
On New Year's Day we went to Gloria's sister's house and had a traditional Southern New Year celebration family get together complete with black-eyed peas (not the band) and cabbage. If the year goes any bit like the evening and day did, I know it's going to be a spectacular 2009!
